In 1988, the WMU Broncos galloped out of the gate and pounded their first five opponents, outscoring them 177-65.  They beat the University of Wisconsin, their first win against a Big Ten team and went on to face CMU in a rivalry game that set an attendance record at Waldo Stadium. After winning an outright MAC conference title, they traveled to California where they beat Fresno State.  Go Broncos!

Grand Valley's football program started in the 1970's.  But it wasn't until the 1980's that a surge to prominence started up.  Arguably, it began in 1985 when Coach Tom Beck took over the program after a 14 game losing streak.  Coach Beck turned things around quickly and the next five years saw the Lakers earn playoff berths as well as become pre-season and post-season ranked fixtures.

In 1989, Grand Valley State University's football team went undefeated for the first time with an 11-0 record. A school record was set by beating Valparaiso 91-0. Four players earned national awards.
