VINTAGE 1987 YES M!CH!GAN
July 13, 2011
Yesterday evening, we found ourselves at a lovely property in Ada, Michigan (hometown of Amway World Headquarters!). We were clearing out nearly 1,000 books from a guest house and stumbled across a little gem from 1987. It was nearly overlooked and recycled away, but thankfully the ever vigilant eyes of TMS spotted it.
Back in the 1980s, the state's official slogan was "YES M!CH!GAN" and in 1987, The Mitten was celebrating it's 150th birthday, all year long:
"Michigan was admitted to the union, as the 26th State, on January 26, 1837, and will observe its Sesquicentennial with a year-long celebration in 1987."

The back of the travel map explains the 1987 vintage slogan:
"YES M!CH!GAN is more than a slogan. It is an affirmation of all that is good about Michigan. Its natural beauty as the centerpiece of the Great Lakes... its endless opportunities for travel and recreation in all of its state and national forests and parks, its thousands of lakes, rivers and streams and miles and miles of beaches along the nation's inland seas...."
It's signed by Governor and Mrs. James J. Blanchard and Jay.

And the 1986 commercial celebrating the Michigan Sesquicentennial:
Love,
The Mitten State
